VIDEO How To Hunt For Ghosts
 10/26/2009 11:11:39 AM  |  Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com

It's been a debatable topic for decades -- do ghosts really exist? While many stand strongly against such an idea, there are plenty of paranormal investigators who believe they have the tools to capture haunting evidence.

One of those investigators is Sherri Brake-Recco of the Haunted Heartland Tours.  She has been searching for spirits for years by using a variety of objects she says help capture energy.

Brake-Recco says she uses scientific equipment coupled with metaphysical objects when doing an investigation.

When it comes to the latter, Brake-Recco says a pendulum is a great object used to pick up energy.  "You would hold this out in front of you and you would wait for something to happen," she explains.  "When I say something's going to happen, it's either going to make big circles, or it's going to make straight lines.  It just picks up on the energy that's around you."  She says you must hold the pendulum away from your own body, otherwise you will be picking up on your own energy, which is also known as your aura.

Another metaphysical tool paranormal investigators often use are dousing rods.  She says they are easy to make out of old clothes hangers, which are bent at a 90 degree angle in a gun-like shape.  She says investigators will use the rods to find energy.  "When we find this energy throughout a building or a location, we know that's an area that we need to focus and take photographs of, or try to capture EVP."

For wannabe investigators, Brake-Recco says dousing rods are an easy place to start since 80 percent of people are successfully able to use them.  To test it out and see if you're able to use them, she says to take your homemade rods and hold them over a cup of water and ask, "Is this water?  Is this water?  Is this water?"  If the rods start crossing over your target, you are in the majority of people who can use the rods effectively.

Nearly every paranormal investigator uses a simple digital voice recorder, that way they can detect voices known as EVP (electronic voice phenomenon).  These voices from beyond the grave can't be heard during the time it was recorded, but are identifiable only during playback.

She also uses night-vision cameras, which help pick up footage of spiritual activity during an investigation.  "It illuminates in zero-light conditions, so you're able to see things that are moving around you."

Then there are thermal-imaging cameras, which show discrepancies in the temperatures around you.  It easily distinguishes hot spots from cold spots.  But be wary, this is an expensive piece of equipment that will drain your bank account by about $4,000.

So, ask yourself again -- do you believe?
