VIDEO Screaming For A Good Cause 10/23/2009 10:35:17 AM | Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com Off in a secluded section of Broadview Heights sits a haunted attraction like no other. Bloodview Haunted House has been bringing screams to the community for years -- and the freaky happenings have all been for a good cause. ![]() The blood-red sign guests venture under before their journey through Bloodview Haunted House in Broadview Heights. advertisement Gary Cerasi, who has been the haunted house manager there for six years, says they have been donating their proceeds to charity for the last 28 years. "We've contributed over $1.6 million to charity in 28 years. It really is pretty cool." And since they donate the monstrous money to charity, Cerasi says their new motto is, "We scare because we care." The funding raised each Halloween season is dispersed through a variety of local charities. "The Lions Club, which sponsors this, we are all about the blind," Cerasi says. "Every year we donate a large amount of money to the blind and blind charities." He says they also use the money to help feed 28 families all year long. Cerasi is certainly somebody with a special connection to the haunted holiday, too. "I have a daughter who was born on Halloween -- who has a baby due on Halloween," Cerasi explains. "So I could have a daughter and a granddaughter both born on Halloween."
He says that getting the attraction up and running each season is a daunting task. Every year they start construction on the haunted house in January. So when everybody is thinking snow, Bloodview is already thinking scares.
WATCH Ryan Haidet's interview with Cerasi:
To be able to donate the money to charity, everybody involved volunteers their time. Bloodview utilizes the acting troupe known as the Legion Of Terror to bring the improvisational scares to the crowds. One man has been freaking people out at Bloodview for 20 years. He goes by Wicked Lester and says he doesn't care about not getting paid for his work. As he scratched his head with a hook, Wicked Lester says he is there for his friends. "I can go to any haunted house and get paid, but when it comes to the friends that I've made over the last 20 years doing this here, you can't beat that."
Each actor at Bloodview creates their own character and name that they use throughout the haunting season. Just like Wicked Lester, one woman, who has been elected the Lord of Acting this season, goes by Grim. She plays a woman in a creepy ballroom gown. WATCH Ryan Haidet's interview with a trio of Bloodview actors:
If you've never been to Bloodview, it truly is an experience that sinks you deep into the darkness of horror. Guests start by walking through the Gore House, which is a small structure that has a disorienting tunnel, body parts and a chainsaw-wielding maniac. Then you trudge through a short section of twisted woods filled with bizarre and crazy characters. At one point there are a group of hicks and hillbillies sitting outside of a trailer just puffin' away on cigarettes. Not scary, but they way they chat with you is very entertaining. After surviving the wicked woods, you travel through the main house, which is filled with an insane asylum, old living room and dozens of intense actors.
And if you think you're safe once outside of the haunted house -- think again. The actors swarm all night outside and "play" with their victims. Be warned, though. This haunted attraction isn't something for everybody. The gore is intense and the interactions with the actors can be a bit graphic in dialogue at times. If you're brave enough, Bloodview haunted house is now open through Halloween night. WATCH a video of the actors in action at Bloodview:
