Budgets, Recalls & Candidates, Oh My!
 8/27/2009 8:49:44 PM  |  Julie Loeper, AkronNewsNow.com

The Summit County Board of Elections split the vote on lowering it's budget Thursday, got the bill for June's Akron Mayor recall election and acted to pare down the number of candidates running for Akron School Board.

Democrats on the Board of Elections wanted to lower the budget by $172,000.

Board member Brian Daley opposed the cut saying lowering the total budget, that was already approved, and keeping the actual spending at the same ammount would only increase what the deficit looks like. Democrat Wayne Jones voted for the spending plan change saying he didn't see any reason not to. He said the Board was not going to spend that money anyway.

Democrats also said Summit County needs to show a true representation of the spending plan and the Republicans say a lower budget means a higher deficit and didn't think see any benefit for the Board of Elections  if the money went back to the general fund.

After a debate, Democrats voted for the budget cut and Republicans voted against it, splitting the vote 2-2. The motion will now be sent to the state for a tie-breaker vote.

Auditors also presented the board with a final bill to forward to the City of Akron for the June 23 recall election. The tab came to more than $194,000 for the election, which saw a turnout of slightly more than 21%. Mayor Don Plusquellic easily turned aside the recall challenge, 21,093 to 7,405, a three-to-one margin.

Board members also noted nearly a dozen candidates disqualified from a variety of candidate races in the coming municipal elections, most involving school board races. Five of 14 candidates vying for positions on the Akron School board were disqualified, leaving nine for four open positions on the ballot in November with Jason Haas the lone incumbent seeking reelection. Member Kirt Conrad announced he would resign to take a job with SARTA in Stark County, providing a fifth opening.
