MULTIMEDIA UPDATE Cleaning Up A Mess Of Cats 7/10/2009 10:03:07 AM | Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com When foreclosure forced a man from his Lakemore home, he left more than 50 cats behind. Cat rescue specialist Eric Schickendantz says they still need help in finding a place for the animals. ![]() Some of the cats found left behind at a Lakemore home after its owner was forced out due to foreclosure. advertisement "The owner's brother has been feeding them, and surprisingly the cats are extremely healthy," Schickendantz says. "These are beautiful cats. Normally under the situation like this, they are emaciated and usually starving -- this is not the case here." So far the Humane Society of Greater Akron has taken 12 of the cats, which leaves 45 felines at the home. Schickendantz and others went throughout the house on Thursday and cleaned up some of the mess. "We got it cleaned up and we used a disinfectant yesterday and we basically went over the entire first floor with a hose."
In an e-mail he says the smell was awful -- "enough to make your eyes run."
He felt the cats had been out of control for months, not weeks. "This is just a case of an animal lover that everything went wrong," Schickendantz says. "It started out with a single cat four years ago and this cat produced because it wasn't spayed." That single cat reportedly produced 100 offspring. The electric has since been turned off at the home and Schickendantz says they have a limited amount of time to get the remaining animals out. "If we just had 10 rescue groups that took five cats, we could solve this problem and we desperately need those people.... We have sent out alerts and we're trying desperately to work with local rescue groups, but the problem is gigantic. Most of the shelters are already full."
One Of A Kind Pet Rescue is assisting in the effort. If you're able to offer some help, you can call Schickendantz directly at 330-864-2879.
