AUDIO Around Akron on Election Day
 6/23/2009 8:19:43 PM  |  Mike Glass & Colin Morris, AkronNewsNow.com

Mother Nature smiled on Akron during a very uncommon election, but only about one in five Akron voters made it to the polls.

Plenty of sun and clear skies for election day in Akron's first-ever mayoral recall. The turnout of just under 21% of Akron's registered voters bested forecasts by elections officials of 10-15%.

The decision to keep or recall Mayor Don Plusquellic has been a touchy issue for months: some want him replaced, some want him to stay, and some are just plain angry at the hundreds of thousands spent on the whole process. 94-year-old Lawrence Zurilli came out to vote and wasn't shy about his opinion.

"I don't like it," Zurilli said. "I am sorry it had to happen. But that is the democratic system. People have a right under the charter to demand a recall. ... It is a waste of money and I am very sorry about that."

Not everyone sees it Zurilli's way, though. Voters outside a polling center in Akron's Ward 3 said the money was a small amount compared to the city's budget.

But for all the hullabaloo leading up to the election, turnout at most polling stations was sleepy and the workers tending them looked bored.

Zurilli has more than a few elections under his belt, but even he thought this election was unusual. He said the turnout seemed "very, very low. I was the only one in the voting area."

Turnout was qualitatively inconsistent. Within the same wards, some poll workers reported low turnout in one precinct and lines at the booths for others.
