UPDATE AUDIO Voter Turnout Low 6/23/2009 3:28:00 PM | Chris Keppler, Larry States, Tina Kaufmann, Marcy Pappafava, AkronNewsNow.com It doesn't seem as though many Akron residents are coming out to cast a ballot in the recall election of Mayor Don Plusquellic. advertisement Updated at 5:10 p.m. With just a few hours left to vote in the recall election of Mayor Plusquellic voter turnout remains light. Summit County Board of Elections Director Marijean Donofrio says according to trouble shooters in the field, "we have doubled what they were about 10:00 this morning as far as how many voters have been to those specific precincts". She says wards seven and eight have had the heaviest traffic. Ward six is coming on strong as well. Traffic has been steady all day but no one is breaking down the doors says Donofrio. She thinks turnout will be in the ten to 15 percent range. As for trouble, Donofrio says it's been minimal. She says nothing more or less than on a normal election. Updated at 3:25 p.m. AkronNewsNow's Mike Glass says there is some activity with voters at the First Baptist Church of Akron on Shatto Avenue. Wards 7 and 8 seem to have considerable turnout, for a Special Election, with people in favor of keeping Plusquellic in office. It's taking people only about five minutes to get in, vote, and get out. Glass says it's much different than in other elections. Today, the only thing outside to indicate a polling location is an American flag - there are no signs posted and no one wearing any sort of attire to show their support for or against the recall effort. UPDATED 12:27 p.m. Voter turnout very low so far in today's mayoral recall election in Akron, according to Summit County Elections Director Marijean Donofrio. She tells AkronNewsNow that turnout is heaviest in wards 7 and 8 compared to the wards closer to the central and downtown area of the city. Donofrio says in wards 2,3 and 4 voter turnout is in the 6 to 8% range so far.
Donofrio says there have been only a couple of minor problems so far. She says a morning equipment problem at one polling place was corrected when they finally installed new memory cards, and she says a couple of poll workers overslept. Other than that the election process has run smoothly so far. Polls are open until 7:30pm. Earlier coverage: "I'm sure it will be a shorter line and they'll only have one oval to mark so they'll be getting out of there a lot quicker," said Board of Elections Director Marijean Donofrio. Turnout was heaviest in Ward 8 - the city's west side - as of 9:00 this morning, according to Donofrio. She says Ward 3 was among a number of areas in the city that reported having about 10 - 12 voters during that same time period. Still, Donofrio doesn't know if that's a good indication for Mayor Don Plusquellic or the group that wants him thrown out of office.
About 8900 ballots had been cast prior to this election day, whether in person or through the mail. The elections board expects to receive more ballots today and as long as they were postmarked by Monday, they'll be counted. The polls are open until 7:30 P.M.
