AUDIO Today's The Day -- Will Plusquellic Stay? 6/23/2009 5:54:51 AM | Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com It's been months in the making and today the drama unfolds -- the mayoral recall election of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic. ![]() Today marks the day for the recall election of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic. advertisement The polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. The mayoral recall effort kicked into high gear after the Sewers For Scholarships issue failed in November -- and Plusquellic condemned non-supporters to Hell. Since then, it's escalated to much more. The group Change Akron Now, lead by attorney Warner Mendenhall, despises the mayor's attitude and thinks he's misspending taxpayers dollars. Group members also feel Plusquellic cheated to get in office, but say if he comes out on top in the recall, he'll be legitimized. The other side raises the question of why there's even an attempt to recall Plusquellic when he hasn't committed a crime. Tom Sawyer, Akron's former Mayor, current State Senator, also Citizens for Akron spokesman, defends the Mayor. "Don's got a short fuse sometimes. He can pop off, but it's the other side of being passionate about the things that he believes deeply in." Not liking the mayor's personality isn't a good enough reason to try and oust him, Sawyer says, adding the mayor's track record of keeping Akron economically healthy in hard times should outweigh any personal feelings about Plusquellic's demeanor.
A "for" vote is for removing the 59-year-old Plusquellic from office. An "against" vote opposes the recall.
If the recall fails, Plusquellic would remain in office for the rest of his four-year term. He was re-elected in 2007. Keep checking AkronNewsNow for ongoing coverage of today's special election.

Also, look for city council to propose changes to the city charter regarding recalls of elected officials. posted at 6/23/2009 8:21:12 AM (11788) whocares said:To cruisemeister... I agree, maybe city council should put a line in the charter stating a request for recall needs to go through the courts first and a judge needs to rule whether a law has even been broken. And maybe a second line stating, if it still goes by the number of votes, it should be based on the last election in which someone else was even strong enough to run against the mayor. Going based on the number of votes in an un-contested election is kind of stupid. Having 2% of the population in the City able to do this means a change needs to be made. posted at 6/23/2009 9:34:52 AM (11792) Firestoneparker said: whocares - I agree.. The charter need to be changed quickly! posted at 6/23/2009 9:45:46 AM (11793) misstia said:ah yes, change the charter to deny citizens their constitutional rights....par for the course in akron...just like we are denied our right of free assembly and woe be tide those who exercise freedom of speech... posted at 6/23/2009 10:03:02 AM (11794) citizenj said: @ historybuff - you can claim 'conspiracy' all you want, but this is not Iran...this is not a third world country. Votes 'For' and 'Against' will be counted by both Republicans and Democrats fairly tonight. Don't try and corrupt the peoples choice, whatever it may be, with your ridiculous accusations. posted at 6/23/2009 10:12:07 AM (11795) Firestoneparker said: Misstia - We don't want to deny the Citizens constitutional rights, Just yours and Mendenhalls! So I propose we change the Charter and name you two personaly to ban you from Records requests, Recalling officials, Fighting speeding tickets also have it read your taxes have to paid in full! posted at 6/23/2009 10:23:05 AM (11796) whocares said:To misstia... "ah yes, change the charter to deny citizens their constitutional rights" It wouldn't deny anyone their rights. What it would do is deny the 2% of complainers from causing problems. It's like banning meat from the grocery store because 2% of the population is a vegetarian. We have elections every 4 years. If the 2% of the population doesn't like what the Mayor is doing, you vote for your preference then instead of causing a ruckus half way into his term. The wording needs to be fixed to prevent this from happening again. If the mayor had pulled a gun on someone and shot them, while at work, then a judge should rule that it was illegal and THEN a recall should move forward. But having a tiny 2% of the city population create problems shouldn't be allowed. And about denying citizens their rights.... They were given the right to vote for mayor 2 years, 6 years, 10 years, 14 years, 18 years, and 22 years ago. Plenty of chances for the complainers to use their rights!!! posted at 6/23/2009 10:48:45 AM (11799) bassn317 said: To Mistia: to add on to what who cares has to say, no one is denying you your constitutional right. They need to remove the "loophole" which Warner himself said he found. Here is the definition of a loop hole: posted at 6/23/2009 12:08:06 PM (11800) Retired APD said: Don't let the corrupt political machine, the strong-arm tactics and the shameful ads mislead you!! posted at 6/23/2009 12:40:06 PM (11801) Firestoneparker said: Retired APD - How is voting for the recall supporting our police. I can see if the mayor had done something illegal or at least immoral to have a recall considered. This seems to me that someone just woke up on the wrong side of the bed and said, 'What can I do to mess up the city of Akron?' The mayor, for better or for worse, was re-elected by the people of the city of Akron. At best, there needs to be some form of malfeasance or misconduct that the mayor has been a part of while in office that needs to be identified by the petitioners. All this has been is he said, he said crap. Nothing concrete. Just a lot of finger pointing. Everyone putting the blame of the problems of this city on everyone else. When in fact we are all to blame. We are all part of this city and if we are not all doing our part to be part of the solution then we are just part of the problems. So tomorrow, let us put this matter behind us and work together to get things going in the right direction. posted at 6/23/2009 8:44:17 PM (11822) bassn317 said: tomtom...you have had the only mature, sane comment I have read on here in the last 3-4 weeks posted at 6/23/2009 9:12:11 PM (11831) ispysomthing said: Miss Tia if you don't like it....why don't you run for Mayor? March your butt right down to the BOE and throw your hat in. That's why it's called an election! You seem to have the time to request records all day at the city office, so you could spend your time on the campaign trail and fix all these issues in Akron. I mean....come on.....at least we aren't Cuyahoga County!! posted at 6/23/2009 10:32:57 PM (11848) letsgetreal said: I don't know about anyone else, but I am soooo glad it's over now. Both sides are finger pointing and/or blaming and taking up way too much "needed city money." Im not a real political or numbers man but how many times has Mr. Don been elected, a few right? So why if he is so bad does he continue to be relected and at times without opposition? Just to clear it up I do not really care who wins, JUST STOP BLOWING MORE MONEY AND TAKING UP SPACE IN THE NEWS!!! Ok my $.02 has been spent.
