UPDATE Absentee Voting Tops 8000 6/22/2009 10:58:50 AM | Chris Keppler, AkronNewsNow.com Plenty of voters are participating in the recall election of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic. advertisement 8,500 people had cast ballots as of noon today, according to the Summit County Board of Elections. Staffers there say it's been busy all morning, with the parking lot at 470 Grant Street full throughout the morning and voters filling the lobby area. "I expect that we'll be busy until 8:00," said Summit County Board of Elections Director Marijean Donofrio. "We've been extremely busy today."
That number is neither high nor low to board officials, who have said repeatedly that this is a first-time experience, so they can't predict voter turnout in terms of absentee votes or the number of ballots cast overall.
Donofrio says the number of early votes will likely come in at around 9,500. She says they get about 300 - 400 ballots through the mail every day.
Summit County Board of Elections Deputy Director Bryan Williams previously said that no matter how high voter turnout is prior to an election day, there is likely to be twice that many again on the election day itself.
The early voting number so far represents about half the number of total ballots cast when Plusquellic defeated challenger Joe Finley in the 2007 primary election. In that election, Plusquellic won 9,998 voters. Finley got 8,908. The mayor was unopposed in the general election.
The board of elections is open until 8:00 tonight. Ballots being mailed to the board must be postmarked by today or they will not be included in the vote count. Content © AkronNewsNow.com. All rights reserved.

There is no wow this is amazing! Most the people I talk to are red faced mad about these shenaningans! We the voting citizens of Akron voted our Mayor in a short time ago! Now we're paying a half a million dollars to vote him in again! That is not something to be happy about! Not in these times! posted at 6/22/2009 7:37:43 PM (11755) girl from akron said: I agree with Firestoneparker. Outrageous to spend all this money in times like these. The charter needs to be changed immediately. posted at 6/22/2009 8:01:09 PM (11758) misstia said:it is not a half million dollars! don't believe everything you see on flyers... posted at 6/22/2009 8:25:45 PM (11759) cruisemeister said: And don't believe everything that Mendenahll has told you... posted at 6/22/2009 9:19:40 PM (11761) malisam said:Are you for real telling me to not be happy about democracy? Are you serious? This is Democracy and it is on the books to utilize. Regardless of if you agree with it or not, it is democracy playing out and you want me to boo this? You want me to boo the fact that over 8000 people at this moment are letting their voices be heard? This is democracy. I do not hear people booing democracy when it bought Young's restaurant. You may not believe in the democratic process but I love Akron and I will not boo the fact that over 8000 people love it as much as I do. I will not boo the fact that this is a great American process just because I do not agree with the issue. This city has wasted tons of money on other things and an election that costs 80 cents per person is not going to make or break this city. Selling prime real estate for a dollar might. posted at 6/22/2009 9:54:48 PM (11763) misstia said:i look at the facts myself and make up my own mind...the BOE has said themselves it will be around $175,000 for the election, so where/how do you get $500,000??? posted at 6/23/2009 4:59:45 AM (11771) akronite51 said:And the worst part is,Firestoneparker, if they lose the vote and Mayor Don doesn't get recalled, they can do this all over again. I don't support the mayor, and I'll probably vote him out in the next election, but I want to do it the American way...not the communist way. posted at 6/23/2009 8:11:41 AM (11787) Firestoneparker said: Misstia - All your groups record requests = $200,000.00, The Election = $175,000.00, The Mayor and his staff's time = Let's estimate, it's been a year = $175,000.00. Total = I'm getting an estimate of about $550,000.00. Thanks Change Akron now for wasting our money! If you wish to leave a comment, please log in or register. |
