 6/15/2009 10:59:21 PM  |  Mike Ward, AkronNewsNow.com

Summit County lawmakers have come out in strong support of Akron mayor Don Plusquellic.

County Council lined up at its Monday night meeting behind a resolution opposing the June 23rd recall effort against Mayor Plusquellic, and spoke enthusiastically about his relationship with county officials and agencies.

Councilman-at-large Pete Crossland says Plusquellic works well with county government.

Council president Nick Kostandaras says the same, and says he doesn't think the Akron mayor should be pulled out of office in mid-term.

Crossland says considering the way the city and county have been working on economic development issues, he doesn't think it makes sense to start with someone new in the Akron mayor's office.

The resolution was supported by all council members present on a voice vote.  Council members Gloria Rodgers and Paula Prentice did not attend the meeting.

"Gotta protect their own". It appears that most of the mayor's major contributors share the same middle name, "abatement". What amazes me the most, is anti-recall supporters citing that Akron would face some type of implosion if 'The Don' is recalled. That's frightening. What if, God forbid, our mayor passed away? Would Akron face certain self-destruction? I think not. My issue is that when ANY elected official places more importance on themselves than the whole of their people, it's time for them to leave. Just a fraction of those tax abatements could repair all sidewalks that have become Extreme skateboard ramps.

KaraokeChris,
First off, if you do not like your sidewalks, there is a quick fix for that. Call the city, get a petition, get your neighbors to sign it, and pay your asessments.... problem solved.

Also, there is a major difference between a mayor dying in office, and being recalled. A recall sends a negative public image of the city to future business interests, but then again you do not like to attract business so that does not matter (at least not through financial incentives, but maybe a nice fruit basket would work for you).

Malisam,
I agree, County Council siding with the mayor..... hold on, say it isn't so... ha ha ha.

Less than a week, and this waste of time and resources will be over. yippy skippy.

Another thing for Karaokechris, It is the homeowners and businessowners responsibility to maintain the walk in front of their property. Call the Engineering Department like the rest of the people do and just get your sidewalk replaced... homeowners do have to pay for about half the cost if the city replaces it. 7 days and we will see who the majority want as their mayor and hopefully the pro-recallers tuck their tails between their legs and go back into hiding.

Stunning.

Imagine an entrenched politician not wanting to work with "someone new".

Imagine the embarrassment that could come to these guys when the skeletons come out of the closet after a change in leadership in Akron's City Hall.

Wayne - Don't bring up embarrassment. What the Recall group is doing is an embarrassment to all the Akron Citizens! Taking the majority of Akron's vote in a proper election and flushing it down the toilet because some shmuck found a loophole.

so whocares, the sidewalk is my responsiblity? I guess I can just go out there and start hacking it up right? Or do I have to pay the inflated prices to have the city come and do it with their workers that are overpaid?

misstia,
Regarding petitions, that would be like me asking if you work in the records department because you have such an extensive collection of them. I do not work in the city's petition department (if they have such a thing), or the building department, or the AMHA, nor do I work downtown.

I know about the petitions, because...wait for it..... I know that when my street looked like a DMZ, we asked when it would get done. They said it was not on the list to get done soon, BUT if WE get a petition we could get it done sooner. Well, we did that and it got paved at the end of the year. Imagine that... citizens working WITH the city, not against it.

Yes alex, the sidewalk IS your responsibility... to maintain. You can personally pay a contractor to replace. May be cheaper, but it's all at once. Go through the city and I believe you can spread the cost over 10 years... Yes, a little off the topic thanks to KaraokeChris. About 180 hours, and this waste of time will actually be proven to be waste of time.

You might be embarrassed, but I am an Akron Citizen and I AM PROUD of my fellow citizens who are following the guidelines of the Akron City Charter and are using the power of the voter (not the outside influence peddlers and cash cows) to bring this matter to the ballot box next Tuesday.

HA HA HA, that made me laugh, thanks I need to be reminded that slapstick is still funny sometimes.

If you want 8-tracks, hit the Hartville flea-market, there is sometimes a guy there with them.

yeah, couldn't help that there akroncitizen! i've gotten some 8-tracks at hartville...the former akron flea market which moved to canton has a few booths that have them...and a few years ago i went to a flea market in dover and they had the most 8-tracks of any place outside of a record store in the 1970s, they had reel to reels too...

FirestoneParker you are incorrect in your assumption that the majority of Akron voted the mayor in the last time. The majority of democrates that voted in the primary wanted the mayor and the Republicans just had to go with that answer because that was all they had to choose from in November because of our system that requires you have to switch parties to vote in the primaries. I know your next argument is that this is the way the system is set up. The recall system is the same way and so in essence they are just following our charter just as those Republicans had to follow the charter almost two years ago. All you people are forgetting a simple but true fact. The Republicans were not represented fairly in the past elections and they will be coming out to vote on the recall. Has the mayor pandered at all to the Republicans in the last 20 years? Hmmm it might just get interesting.

Malisam,
Are you implying that the efforts of those in C.A.N. are motivated by a hidden agenda propogated by the Summit GOP? Are Warner, Miss Tia and the other members just secretly aligned with Alex Arshinkoff in some masterful conspiracy to finally be able to run a republican candidate? Seriously?????? I mean, you are kidding right!!!!!

Anyways, If a republican was that upset with the way our city was being run, they would have changed parties during the primary. This would have had little to no effect on the republican primary, since those candidates (federal) were chosen before they got here, and then they could have voted for Joe Finley. Give me a break on the politcal spin. This is more of an excercise in personal gratification, than some more complex "grass-knoll" conspiracy.

I do not agree that the use of resources for a recall is a good thing, but it is OUR RIGHT as citizens to do it, and we are doing it. Democracy prevails, even if common sense isn't so common.

Malisam - Really? Republicans were not represented fairly! Thats just ridiculous! I would go further but it looks like akroncitizen has handled that matter. Akron has been blessed to have a man of quality and leadership as Mayor. Akron would not be where it is today without this man's intuitive abilities. A lot of what I've seen regarding comments for the recall all seem to be sour grapes. People who didn't get their way and are forcing their poor judgment on everyone else. Don't we have enough of that going on in the world today? The time to have ousted the Mayor was in NOV during the election. There weren't any shining candidates running against him then and there's no one who can fill this man's shoes now. Try communicating instead of just harping on past issues that didn't go your way.

We just forgot to tell you until the recall started!" I was on the fence before but now I'm definately voting for the recall. What a phony BS'r this mayor is! Misstia, Warner, Patty, thanks for all your hard work in bringing all the issues to light!
