AUDIO 835 Apply For Janitor's Job 3/10/2009 7:52:10 AM | Ryan Haidet The deadline to apply for a single janitorial job at the Perry Local Schools was Monday afternoon -- and 835 applicants answered the call. advertisement Director of business operations and classified personnel for the Perry Local Schools, Barry Mason says that they never expected that many applicants. "We kind of assumed we were going to have 200 or 300 (and) with the economy, maybe a little more. But when we started to hit the 500 mark we certainly were surprised." The job at Edison Junior High School pays about $15 an hour.
Mason says that people with various job experiences applied for the position. "I've seen licensed electricians," Mason says. "We've even had some teachers frustrated with the job search for a teaching position apply in an effort to kind of get their foot in the door with the school district. So yeah, it's been a diverse group." Mason says that many of the applicants may have been interested in the janitorial job because of the benefits being offered. "Many of these people might have a comparable wage, but not the benefits package and as they try to look out for themselves and their family, the cost of a good medical benefits package is certainly something to be considered." Mason says that lots of the applicants are currently employed elsewhere. Previous coverage:
