AUDIO Zoar Tavern Filled With Spirits 10/21/2008 3:13:05 AM | Katie Young The town of Zoar has the reputation of being one of the most haunted locations in Ohio. When visiting the Zoar Tavern, you can see why this reputation holds up.
It was once called the Number 23 House and was home to the Zoarite's doctor in the 1800s. Since there were not any hospitals when the town was settled in 1817, this house got as much traffic as a hospital would. Meaning...yes, people did die there.
This tavern is said to be haunted by a little girl, who has been recorded on tape recorders and has allegedly tried to communicate with any children who go into the tavern. The story of her death is unknown.
The other paranormal story that surrounds the tavern has to do with a door that swings on its own. Employees of the tavern see this door move by itself so often that is no longer a surprise to them.As for the haunted town of Zoar, its unusual lore has survived the centuries. This town was founded in 1817 by German seperatists who were forced to flee Germany. These seperatists settled this town and established a commune. Now, the unusual part of this story - the town was founded by a seance. This seance was held to help the Zoarites find what land to start their commune on. Zoar survived 75 years as a successful commune until the Zoar Hotel brought outsiders into the town and the commune eventually disbanded.
If you are interested in visiting Zoar, you can stay the night at the Zoar Tavern and wander the town during the day.
