AUDIO Scene Is Set For Cooey's Execution
 10/14/2008 8:39:04 AM  |  Ryan Haidet

With the execution looming for the man convicted of murdering Wendy Offredo and Dawn McCreery in 1986, a prison spokeswoman says Richard Cooey has been awake since early this morning.

The spokeswoman said that Cooey, 41, went to sleep at 4:06 a.m. and he woke up on his own at 5:20 a.m. He did take a shower, but he did not accept breakfast.

His attorney Dana Cole, and his spiritual adviser Jim Cole, have been visiting him this morning since he's been up. His other attorney, Eric Allen, has been there as well.

LISTEN to ANN reporter Chris Keppler describe what Cooey has been doing prior to execution

They say he was very quiet last night, he sat on his bed, he walked around, watched little or no television and had little or no conversations with the execution team, but still appeared to be in a good mood.

Protestors have gathered outside of the prison in Lucasville where Cooey is set to be executed at 10 a.m.

The death warrant will be read shortly before Cooey takes his final 17 steps from the holding cell to the execution chamber.

He'll be given a chance to make a final statement before the three-drug cocktail is injected into his body - ending his life in an estimated 10 minutes or less.

Witnesses from both families will also be given a chance to speak, but not until after the fact. The McCreery family is not expected to take the podium, the Offredo's declined to attend and Cooey's side consists of three attorneys.

ANN's Chris Keppler, who will be a witness to the execution, reported from Lucasville.
