NewsUPDATE Cooey Is Executed

After nearly 22 years on death row, numerous appeals and two trips to Ohio's death house, Richard Cooey was executed this morning.

The execution - Ohio's 27th since 1999 - took place at 10 a.m. in Lucasville. Cooey, 41, was convicted for raping and murdering Dawn McCreery, 20, and Wendy Offredo, 21, in 1986.
Cooey was officially pronounced dead at 10:28 a.m.
Cooey made one final statement prior to his execution: "You (*************) haven't paid any attention to anything I have said in the last 22 years, why would you pay attention to anything I say now."
One of Cooey's final - and perhaps his most famous - pleas came a few weeks ago when attorneys filed papers stating that Cooey's obesity would make it too difficult for the execution team to locate a viable vein.
Cooey's body will be cremated at the state's expense.
