AUDIO Wanna Hear A Ghost? 10/28/2009 5:44:51 AM | Katie Young As Halloween approaches, my search for the ultimate paranormal thrill has grown more and more desperate. I have searched everywhere for a REAL fear-filled experienced. Then I found it - in Akron's own backyard, in the ghostly woods of Rogues Hollow. advertisement Originally published on 10/15/08:
The haunted reputation of Rogues Hollow has faded over the years, giving way to places such as the Mansfield Reformatory and Franklin Castle. Although the paranormal attention has moved from this location, that does not make it any less haunted.
That is why I decided to venture to these haunted woods in search of the ultimate thrill. The best way to get the full haunted experience of Rogues Hollow is to go at night, so I did just that. People should know that if you, personally, try to wander this property at night - you will be chased off. But, if you go on the Hunt the Hollow Tour with Haunted Heartland Tours owner and guide, Sherri Brake-Recco, then you are not breaking any laws. For a small price and a short bus ride you can wander these woods at night with some ghost-hunting equipment that Brake-Recco will lend you and teach you to use. This location has many stories that Brake-Recco will share on your tour, including the most paranormally active Cry Baby Bridge. With 24 Cry Baby Bridges in Ohio, this is the one that is said to be legitimately haunted. The woods themselves are said to be haunted by quite a cast of characters including the local sheriff, three men who were cut off at the torso by a train, along with murder victims and coal miners. "There were over 200 underground coal mines in this area. There were counterfeiters that worked out of this area. There were bootleggers who worked in this area," Brake-Recco announced around the bonfire,"There were mining accidents that occured, there were decapitations that took place. This was a rowdy area. That is how it got the name Rogues Hollow." After the introduction of the woods and the ghostly tales that surround them, we were shown the McCullough house. This house was home to a family with 7-8 children. Brake-Recco announced that people often record children's voices at this location. This is where I recorded an EVP, which stands for electronic voice phenomenon. This occurs when you record the voice of ghost. Usually the voices of the dead are out human's spectrum of hearing (like a dog whistle). But, an audio recorder can pick up this sound that we can't hear with our own ears. Basically, you will never know you recorded an EVP until you play back the audio. After the crowd broke apart to Hunt the Hollow for ghosts, I decided to go back to the foundation of the McCullough house and try to record some EVP. While standing there asking questions, I did not hear any children's voices, that is until I listened to what I recorded... If you still didn't hear it, you can listen to my whole EVP session at the McCullough house...
Since the voice responded to the statement that nothing was there, Brake-Recco says that this is an "intelligent" haunting.
Brake-Recco only tells stories of historical facts on her tours, so there were children living in this house back in the 1800s. Whether or not the little girl's voice is one of the McCullough kids, there is no way of knowing. The only thing that I am sure of is - I did record an EVP in Rogues Hollow. This experience definitely offered me the scare I was looking for this year. With this EVP experience, I have officially filled my terror quota for this Halloween season. If you still have to fill yours, the charismatic Sherri Brake-Recco is the woman to call.
