Career Fair Success Tips

The following list of quick tips may help you succeed at a job fair.

Come Prepared – it is important to be prepared to meet with many employers at a career fair. Your preparation ahead of time will help you stand out from the crowd.

  • Review the list of attendees – before you go to the Career Fair, review the list of employers who will be there. Decide which companies you would most like to meet with. Know their location at the event so you can quickly and easily meet them.
  • Rehearse your Career Commercial and practice introducing yourself to prospective employers.
  • Bring your resume – Plan on leaving one copy of your resume with every employer at the job fair so bring plenty of copies with you.

Make a good impression – you only have 60 seconds to make a good first impression. Make it count!

  • Look Your Best - First impressions start with appearance. Make sure you are well groomed.
  • Dress Appropriately – It is better to stand out by looking too good than by looking underdressed.
  • Turn Your Cell Phone Off - No call is so important that it can’t wait until after you have met with your prospective new employer.

Allow yourself enough time – It is important that you give yourself enough time to meet with the employers you are interested in working for. Some employers may have a small waiting line to meet with them. Others will ask you to complete an application on site. And, some will expect to interview you on-the-spot. Make sure you give yourself enough time at the event to be successful.

Be engaged in your conversations . . . and be engaging It is very important to be an active participant in every conversation you have with a prospective employer.

  • Let Them Talk - Allow them to tell you exactly what they are looking for. You will then be able to explain how you fit their needs.
  • Make Eye Contact - Making eye contact shows you are engaged in the interview and you are listening to what the interviewer is saying.
  • Take Notes - This shows that you are interested and focused. It also helps you review what was said.
  • Sell yourself - Know what you can offer and present it in the best light.
  • Ask Questions - Interviews go both ways. Ask questions to make sure that the opportunity is right for you, too.
  • Be Positive - Don't complain about any previous jobs or employers. This negative attitude reflects poorly on you and is unprofessional.

Follow up to your initial meeting. At most job fairs you will meet many different people who work for many different companies. The companies that are at a job fair will also be meeting with hundreds of job seekers just like you. Follow up after the career fair within two days to thank them again for their time and to see where they are in the decision process.

The tips above will help you succeed when you attend the AkronWorks.com Job Fair Wednesday January 25th. Keep in mind, the most important thing you can do is be yourself!
