CHICAGO (AP) -- When former Illinois Gov. George Ryan steps out of prison, he will step into a world that's changed since he went to prison on corruption charges in 2007.

The 78-year-old Ryan is expected to be released Wednesday from a Terre Haute, Ind., prison. Officials won't confirm his release time citing security. He's going to a halfway house in Chicago.

Ryan will encounter an Illinois where there appears to be less tolerance for corruption. It's also enacted reforms meant to thwart the kind of dealing Ryan engaged in.

The state has also changed because of Ryan's legal actions as governor. Following the Republican's lead, Illinois abolished the death penalty in 2011.

Ryan's personal life has changed as well. His wife and brother died while he was behind bars.
