The Knights struggled offensively but advance to the second round after a close win over Padua 14-11.

The first quarter was scoreless as penalties plagued both teams offensively. Both defenses played stout, forcing numerous three-and-outs as well as punts. Padua forced a fumble from Hoban junior quarterback Dan Hinton, who favored an injured hand most of the game.

The defensive match up continued in the second quarter as the Knights forced a fumble, but the Padua defense would not let them score. The first points on the night came from the foot of Bruins' kicker Zach Paul, who booted a 30 yarder, putting Padua ahead by three points. Hoban would get right back into it on the ensuing kickoff. Return man Xavier Kirskey-Ivery returned the Paul kickoff to the five yard line , setting up a Hoban first and goal. Hinton fumbled the ball again, but the Knights offense was able to recover. On the very next play Hinton found sophomore receiver LaTroy Lewis open in the end zone for the five yard touchdown pass. Hoban headed into the locker room with the 7-3 lead.

The second half started with a bang as Kirskey-Ivery took the opening kickoff 90 yards for the touchdown. Both defenses stood strong in the third quarter allowing very few first downs and no scores. Hoban junior Nate Greczanik would intercept a wayward pass from Padua senior quarterback James Flowers. Hinton was taken out in the second half for the Knights' offense and replaced by senior David Bott, who was the starter in the beginning of the season.

Padua stood strong in the fourth quarter, as the defense stopped Hoban on fourth and two, sacking Bott for an eight yard loss and giving the offense another chance to score. Finally Flowers zipped a 19-yard strike to senior receiver Nick Kaszei for the touchdown. Kaszei would also catch the pass to complete the ensuing two-point conversion. That was as close as Padua would come, as Hoban defensive back Evan Luse would intercept Flowers to end the game.

Archbishop Hoban is set to play Poland Seminary next week. The site for the game is yet to be determined.
