MULTIMEDIA Looking Back At The 'Blair Witch' 10/14/2009 7:02:00 AM | Ryan Haidet, AkronNewsNow.com Remember the sleepy town of Burkittsville, Maryland? The little place with the big cemetery, dark woods and the legend of the Blair Witch... ![]() 'The Blair Witch Project' has been haunting us for 10 years now. Director Eduardo Sanchez tells us all about his hit fright flick.
advertisement Hard to believe, but it has been 10 years since 'The Blair Witch Project' first shocked viewers with its shaky cameras and disturbing finale. For those who have never seen it, the movie shows footage captured by three student filmmakers who went missing while making a documentary about the Blair Witch.
When it was first released, many people believed the footage was actually real and some were forced to leave the theater because they were experiencing motion sickness due to the shaky nature of the cameras.
But the shakiness didn't stop droves of horror fans.
The little independent movie, which was filmed for around $25,000, ended up swallowing in nearly $250 million worldwide. After it's fast-track to success, a sequel was quickly spawned. In an exclusive interview, the film's director Eduardo Sanchez says he hasn't moved away from the Blair Witch just yet. He's currently working on part three and plans to pitch it to the movie studio within the next few months. Sanchez says that the first movie really changed his life. "It gave me a career," Sanchez said. "I'm able to make a living making films now. It took me from living off credit cards to probably upper-middle class lifestyle -- or at least middle class."
I will admit that I was a big Blair Witch fan when it was first released. The completely original filmmaking and frightening sequences had me thrilled to be a horror fan. And the ending couldn't have delivered a more bone-chilling moment!
I was so into the movie that I actually stopped out and visited Burkittsville a few years after the movie was released. And I must say, it is quite a creepy place to visit. The woods are dark and ominous sitting atop a large hill behind the tiny town. A big cemetery, which sits in front of Burkittsville, also provides an eerie atmosphere -- perfect for the film.
There are plenty of other fans just like myself. "There's always the Blair haters," Sanchez says. "A lot of people really hate that movie, but I think more people love it. And the love that people have is just completely unconditional and completey fanatical at times. They just love the movie, love every aspect of it."

Back to those of you who have never watched the movie, it truly is a unique movie unlike anything you've ever seen. If horror isn't your style, then this is a film you will want to avoid for good. But if you are game for scares and screams, this is a fright fest worth checking out.
Still scary after 10 years.
