Oklahoma Author Dies at 62

Johnny C. Quarles, an Oklahoma author who wrote more than 12 novels set in the American West, died Sunday. He was 62.

His wife, Wendy Quarles, says he died after suffering a stroke on Sept. 24. He also had suffered from diabetes.

His books included "Fools Gold,'' "Black Creek'' and "The Run.''

Quarles was born in Warren, Ohio, and later moved with his family to West Virginia, where he attended East Bank High School, and New Mexico. Following his service in the Army, he worked for Frisco Railroad.

He was novelist-in-resident at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., from 1995 to 1998.
