Ground Broken For New Autism Center 9/18/2009 12:50:49 PM | Larry States, AkronNewsNow.com Groundbreaking was held today for a new Autism Center in Akron. advertisement The Center to treat autistic children is becoming a reality thanks to a gift from Goodyear chairman and CEO Bob Keegan and his wife Lynn. The Keegan Family Center for Autism will be a leased facility on Cleveland-Massillon Road in Copley Township and will provide several services to help families, including: family liaison , workshops, support groups, volunteer networks and more. The Autism Family Foundation partnered with Akron Children's Hospital and the Summit County Educational Service Center to make the new autism facility possible. The 12,500 square foot center is expected to open in August 2010. It will accommodate 18 severe autistic students, in the beginning, with the goal to help transition them back into their original school district. In Cuyahoga Falls, there are 68 students diagnosed with autism of the 5,100 in the district, or about one in every 75 children. According to the Autism Society of America, the developmental disability affects one in every 150 American children. Children's Hospital CEO Bill Consodine says the center "will be something the whole country will be proud of and notice."
