Children Diabetes Increase 8/13/2009 3:10:31 PM | Akron Children's Press Release At a time when an increasing number of children are being diagnosed with diabetes and other endocrine disorders, Akron Children's Hospital is expanding its Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology. advertisement With a national shortage of pediatric endocrinologists and the incidence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes tripling since 1980, the additional physicians will greatly increase access to care for children in northeast Ohio. A fifth physician, Jaime Haidet, MD, is slated to join the center in 2010. "When I started in endocrinology in the 1970s, it was very rare to see a child diagnosed with diabetes before the age of 5," said William Riley, MD, director of Akron Children's Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology. "Now I might see five cases in a week." Dr. Longmire has special expertise in both bone health and long-term survival of childhood cancer patients. She comes to Akron Children's from New Jersey, where she served as an assistant professor in the division of Pediatric Endocrinology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Brunswick. She earned her medical degree from the Istanbul University Medical School in Istanbul, Turkey. After completing residencies in internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology, she completed a research fellowship at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility and then a pediatric endocrinology fellowship at the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Dr. Van Sickle has special interest in cystic fibrosis because children with CF are prone to develop diabetes over time. He graduated from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo with a medical degree and doctorate in neuroscience. He then completed a pediatrics residency and fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. Hillegass received her master's in nursing from the University of Akron and is certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. "Very few diseases require the level of ongoing management that diabetes does," said Dr. Riley. "Providing lifelong family and patient education is a unique challenge and so we are thrilled to welcome two additional pediatric endocrinologists to serve the needs of the children in our community." The expanded staff will enable Akron Children's to offer diabetes and endocrinology services at its Beeghly campus in Boardman and to establish additional outreach clinics throughout the region. Akron Children's Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for quality self-management education. Content © AkronNewsNow.com. All rights reserved.
