ECONOMY SERIES: AUDIO More Modifying Child Support
 3/19/2009 4:35:03 AM  |  Lindsay McCoy

More parents responsible for paying child support are requesting lower monthly payments.

"The amount of individuals who have requested a review of their child support obligations has increased significantly," said John Galonsky, assistant prosecuting attorney for The Summit County Child Support Enforcement Agency (CSEA).

CSEA has seen a 15 percent increase in those seeking income reviews in comparison to this time last year.

It's a result of job loss and layoffs according to Galonsky . He said the agency is making changes to help parents reorganize.

"We're trying to shift the way we do things to maximize the needs of the community," he said.

This shift includes the encouragement to go through the income review and adjustment process. Not have a job doesn't mean the monthly payments go away. The court can attach the payment to unemployment benefits.

According to the Ohio Office of Child Support, more than $1.9 billions dollars was owed for the federal fiscal year of 2008. In Summit County more than $91 million dollars in current support was owed in the same time period.

The outlook for the 2009 Fiscal year collections is uncertain at this time, but on average, the current support collection rate was 68.7 percent. For collections in Summit County, it's an average of about 67 percent.

kinda hard to pay your child support if youve lost your job. I know people that have 5 bucks to live on after their child support is paid.

I can say in this instance they were okay financially together. Things get so much harder when you are on your own. As for not having children you cant afford, would any of us be here if our parents conciderd that?
Kids come along, sometimes unplanned and we do the best we can not thinking about the cost initially.
my parents raised 8 together so I dont know what its like not having them both. I have seen family and friends in divorced settings struggle even more so in these times.
