ECONOMY SERIES: AUDIO Unemployment Filing Tips 3/18/2009 7:49:16 AM | Lindsay McCoy With layoff and job cut announcements becoming an almost daily occurrence, many Ohioans are turning to the state's Office of Unemployment Compensation to stay afloat. advertisement The best way to receive unemployment benefits starts with the application process. Julie Smith, deputy director of local operations for the Department of Job and Family Services, recommends signing up online. An email address is needed for receiving weekly updates from the department and the latest information regarding personal accounts.
"About 60 to 70 percent of claims are processed electronically," Smith said.
The application process takes less than ten minutes to complete online or through the Job Line at 1-877-644-6562.
The Job Line offers assistance if someone has questions on a part of the online application. With Ohio's unemployment rate at 8.8 percent in January, the department is working to handle the increase with extra staff.
"We are experiencing extreme delays," she said, "We're having a exponential increase in call volume."
The help the department along, Smith said the call hours have been extended for some days during the week and calls are also taken on Saturdays.
While the online application is preferred, it can be confusing for some and the department is ready to help out anyone who has a question. Smith advises trying the online application first, then calling the Job Line for assistance if needed.
"The agent can actually take over the claim and walk them through it," Smith explained.
If unemployed workers sign up for funds to be transferred electronically, payments will be made each week. Paper checks are issued every two weeks.
Smith said the department sends out less than one percent of its money in paper checks. The online option saves the state millions of dollars in postage charges.
