ECONOMY SERIES: AUDIO Looking For Work?
 3/26/2009 4:08:12 AM  |  Tina Kaufmann

There are jobs available in Akron, and local temp agencies know how to help you find them.

Carol McLaughlin, with Spherion temp agency, says you can visit them online or at their South Main Street location to apply for jobs, "we get work in every day...do we have individuals in our database that we have not found positions for, yes. Are we filling positions everyday, yes."

Spherion fills entry level in the light industrial sector as well as clerical positions.

Stanley Staffing, on West Market Street, is a little different style temp agency, "our company is more promising...we also offer temp to hire and some direct hire."

Owner Dave Stanley says they look to put people in office positions, marketing, accounting, call center/customer service staffing and outside sales positions.

The temps service would be a last resort. they take a percentage of your wages. I think its a rip off. However its work. Many companys benefit hiring temps as well, they can pay them peanuts, no benefits or medical insurance. good bizz for them- they are predators leeching off the poor. I know of no one that ever gets hired through these places fulltime thats a ludicrous statement and a lure tactic to keep them on the hampster wheel.

missfit, you may want to take a better look around. I started my current job as a temp. Been there 4 years now with great benefits. In fact, the majority of employees there were hired in through a temp agency. Benefits, bonuses, full medical..... no hamsters here :)

old man river cites 1 sucess story out of 100. Why do you think Workers Comp BWC, recently was complaining about being broke. They cited the temp ripoffs as the reason. I know Companies that keep temps on forever just to avoid paying benefits. Plenty of hampsters if you bother to look around.

Bart... the mind sees what it wants to see. As I posted earlier, the majority of my co-workers started out as temps. Keep in mind, I'm not referring to those day to day walk-up agencies. I'm talking about the larger services that supply temp to hire positions. There quite of those in the area.

Missfit.... giggling is good. Old man river is what they call me at work. :)

I think by now we know some hire and some abuse the system and potential employee. I know of temp agencys, and not walk up agencys that will keep them temps forever if the Company dictates such. So I think we can agree it goes both ways.
