ECONOMY SERIES: AUDIO Daily Dining On A Tight Budget
 3/18/2009 7:55:48 AM  |  Lindsay McCoy

Sometimes keeping the pantry filled is a tough task, especially as grocery prices are up and the packaging of some products seems to be shrinking.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2007 food prices increased 4 percent. Another increase is expect for 2008. According to Sally Phillips, MS, RD/LD, registered dietitian at Akron Children's Hospital, stretching budgets to fill up at each meal is just another concern during the recession.

Phillips suggests having a plan, maybe five to six meals mapped out for the week before going grocery shopping.

"Having the foods on hand is the first key to be able to control your costs, because then you can control them at the grocery and control yourself from going through the drive thru," she said.

Getting more with less money is possible. Phillips advises shoppers pay close attention to the weekly advertisements, especially the quantities of the items that are offered at a bargain.

"For instance, they might have a huge box of cereal of cereal on sale, but if it's going to go bad, don't get that," she explained.

She recommends families consider how much time is available for preparing meals. For those with more time on their hands, she advises skipping the instant oatmeal and going for the real stuff, chopping vegetables and shredding your own cheese.

Another tip: only buy fruits in season to avoid the risk of buying something that's no good.

High fiber foods keep you fuller longer.

"If you have baked potatoes, then put perhaps sloppy joe or chili on top of that, it's got protein from the meat and the beans and some fiber from the potato," she explained.

She also recommends stews, pastas with vegetables. Canned and frozen vegetables are a cheaper option in comparison to fresh and she recommends those too.
