ECONOMY SERIES: AUDIO Getting Ready To Earn A GED

As people join the job hunting crowd, many are finding the recession is the best time to fine tune their skills.

Those caught in the middle of a crowded job market are turning to training programs or a post-secondary education in an effort to advance their chances of bringing home a paycheck.

A timetable for how long it takes to earn a GED it almost impossible to calculate, because the skill levels of student varies dramatically. Rick Mcintosh, executive director for Project: LEARN of Summit County, explained each person who signs up, either takes the GED practice test or is enrolled into classes to help them prepare to take the test.

From writing and reading to mathematics, Mcintosh said the remedial classes are the most popular. He explained people want to brush up on their basic skills, in addition to obtaining their GED, so they can be enrolled in a training, certification or post secondary education program.

The ABLE Program offers classes to prepare for the GED test at nine locations across the city. The Adult Basic Literacy Education program is offered at the Job Center, Akron Institute, Jobs for Ohio Graduates, Catholic Social Services, Community Support, Youth Build, Edgewood Homes Community Center, North High School and the APS Guinther Administration Building.

To register call (330) 848-0037. Those who register will be signed up for an orientation or the GED practice test.
