Todd Kulman is the news director for the Mid-Michigan Radio Group in Lansing, Michigan.  When he's not reading the headlines of the day, you can find him 'on the trail', eating dehydrated beef stroganoff and drinking filtered pond water.

Todd hopes to one day tackle the 'Big Three' in hiking:  The Appalachian Trail, The Pacific Crest Trail, and The Continental Divide Trail.

  Outdoor Rhythms....
Many outdoor purists say modern music and nature don't mix.  I say that's hogwash!  I've decided to compile a list of my favorite artists, songs, and albums that top my iPod playlist while hiking.

  Pot Growers Target National Parks
Most people head to our national parks to enjoy the peace and tranquility, the wildlife, or the amazing views.  Now, it seems, some are utilizing the national park system to cultivate drugs.  Marijuana, to be precise. Apparently giant trees aren't the only attraction at Sequoia National Park in California....

Gray Wolves Returning To Endangered List
The federal government on Monday agreed to put gray wolves in the western Great Lakes region back on the endangered species list — at least temporarily.

  A Trip To The Recycler
My wife and I are passionate recyclers.  I'm not looking for a pat on the back or anything, it's just something we both feel is important for the environment and provides a little 'peace of mind'.  For most people, recycling is a fairly simple process--wash recycleable item. Put it in a recycle bin.  Place by the curb for pickup.  In our case, it's a little trickier than that.

  Why Not Earth Day?
Today is, of course, Earth Day.  We know this because it always gets a fair amount of attention.  Unfortunately, not all of the attention is positive.  The jokes were flying left and right today. Plenty of laughs, not a lot of action.

  Early Spring Trip
I don't winter hike, so taking an overnight backpacking trip the first weekend in April is risky.  This is Michigan...."...just wait 20 minutes....".  But, I lucked out.

Finally, Some Good News Out Of Washington
Great news this week for anyone who supports the protection of wilderness.  The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to grant wilderness status to two million acres of public land in nine states from California to West Virginia, the largest expansion of protected national wild lands in 15 years.  A large chunk of this protected land is located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

It's Been A Long, Cold Winter....
Obviously, the frequency of my posts has severely declined over the past month or so.  I wish I had a legitimate reason.  I can only say the harsh, Michigan winter severely crippled my ability to provide you with interesting outdoor musings. I know that's a marginal excuse, at best.  But, several days of above-average temperatures and the return of the spring peepers has me once again thinking about the great out-of-doors.  It also has kicked me in the behind to resume posting several times a week.

  A Superior Adventure, Indeed!
Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes.  It's also the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the third-largest freshwater lake by volume.  Begining this June, Hannah Williams and Matt Abbotts will paddle their sea kayaks out of Houghton, Michigan in an attempt to paddle around the entire shoreline of Lake Superior.  The trip will cover approximately 1,300 miles.

  Waking-Up A Sleeping Bear
If you like sand dunes, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in the northeast lower peninsula of Michigan is a must-see.  The national lakeshore was created in 1970 and spans more than 71,000 acres in Leelenau and Benzie counties---it includes North and South Manitou Islands.  It's one of my favorite places in Michigan to visit and it just got a little better.
