Brian Thomas has been president and CEO of AAA Akron since 1999. He is the sixth person to hold that position since the Akron Auto Club formed in 1906. A lifelong Akron resident and graduate of the University of Akron, Brian began his AAA career in 1978, taking road service requests from stranded motorists. He is part of a team of associates serving members of one of the finest local AAA affiliates in the nation.

On "Motor Mouth," Brian comments on issues related to AAA's business lines, including automotive services, travel, and insurance. As a tireless promoter of AAA, he also focuses on different ways in which the Auto Club serves its members and the community at large.

  Winter Arrived, As Planned!
A few Sundays ago, the weather took a very quick and dramatic turn. A brief but powerful wind blew through the area, stripping many trees of their remaining leaves.

  It's as simple as w.w.w.

I've been using the World Wide Web for almost fourteen years now, since I first signed up with America Online in 1995. It's probably safe to stop referring to email, e-commerce, and social media as "emerging trends." Most people are connected now, whether at home, school, work, or all of the above.

Your AAA membership is a financial tool!
You might have joined AAA as sort of an "insurance policy" in the event of a breakdown. No doubt there's great convenience and cost savings if you use our roadside assistance. But you might not know that AAA offers tradidional financial services as well, including credit cards, travelers checks, and deposit savings plans. Today, our AAA Deposit Program could be one of unique value to many of our members who are looking to supplement investment savings outside of the stock market.

The presidential candidates sound off on the future of America's highways, bridges and transit systems

We are in tumultuous financial times, and as the presidential candidates strive to gain your vote, federal spending is a huge topic. The crisis in the financial sector will certainly cost a tremendous amount to repair. I am concerned about the many other tax-funded programs that might be shortchanged in the meantime. Of critical importance is infrastructure spending, especially related to building and maintaining roads and bridges.

Drivers take care - Children's lives depend on it!
As I drove our children to school this morning, I was vividly reminded of the real dangers on the city streets during the school year.

Three Days in the Port Cities of Alaska

On Tuesday morning, which was day three of our Alaska excursion, we awoke alongside the dock in Ketchikan. We had a unique view of a very steep hill, and the local cars took a bit of time climbing it on their morning commute. We talked about how every trip over that hill would put a dent in the family fuel bill, with the record-high gasoline prices. We were scheduled for a shore excursion called Crab Feast and Float Plane Ride, and we were ashore by 9:00 A.M. to meet our tour escort. Only seven of us from the Sapphire Princess opted for this tour. We were joined by a couple from Louisiana and three folks from New Zealand. The bus driver who took us on the 20-minute drive to the other end of the island was a very chatty and informative transplant from North Dakota. Within minutes of being ashore in Alaska, I realized that the TV show, Northern Exposure, must have been based on real Alaskan people.

  Cruise Log, Installment #2

Alaska Cruise Log -A Day at Sea

We were at sea, with no port of call, on day two of our Alaska cruise aboard the Sapphire Princess. I knew that on the three days that followed we would be in Alaska's port cities. Our travel agents at AAA Travel always advise cruise passengers to make their shore excursion reservations in advance of the cruise. And even though I knew better, I put off this important step until we were onboard. With nowhere else to go on Sunday morning, we were off the ship's Tour Desk.

  Captain's Log, Day 1
Welcome to the first installment of my blog. I hope you will visit often and learn about the many, many ways AAA serves the community and creates value for members. "Motor Mouth" is brought to you in conjunction with Akron News Now, the Akron Auto Club's partner for online news.

Much is happening in the realm of fuel prices, funding of our transportation infrastructure, and safety on the roadways. I look forward to sharing opinions about these and other important issues through this blog. But I want to start out on a more lighthearted note, sharing some of the details of an exceptional travel experience.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege to accompany 64 AAA Travel clients on our "2008 AAA President's Cruise" to Alaska. I never gave much thought to taking an Alaska cruise. I was excited about the opportunity to travel with our wonderful clients and my wife Alicia, but candidly I was a bit indifferent about our destination. Was I ever wrong - Alaska by cruise ship was spectacular!

Day One: Embarkation
