I Pledge to What?
A few posts ago I talked about the danger of couching political arguments within the twisted prism of history. Specifically the darkest moment of the 20th Century has been used to compare proposals on healthcare, pro or con, among other things.
My point was that no matter how violently opposed one might be to an issue we are still America, as such we are light years away from the unholy convergence of desperation, fear and hatred that brought the people of Germany and many in Europe to the Temple of Death. It was a short journey taken voluntarily and supported almost to the bloody end.
Let us not forget, after all the excuses, deceit and hubris are brushed away, Hitler was elected. And one of the first things he did as Chancellor was change the nation's pledge of allegiance (small p and a) from loyalty to Germany and replaced that with loyalty to him, to Das Fuhrer. In essence he made himself the country and in the process usurped the nation and its people.
America is ruled by laws, not by people; most certainly not by a person. Do me a favor. Watch the video and tell me where good intentions have gone so dangerously wrong? Note: this was not produced nor endorsed by the administration. At least I certainly hope not.
I know that most of the message is reasonable, rational and common sense. This video has been presented in some schools, some elementary schools around the country. I don't know about you, but I am not comfortable with a pledge of service to one. But if I try very hard to be selfless and energetic I can be of service to many. That is what keeps us from the traps of despotism and keeps the lessons of history fresh.
This video, though well-meaning, is grossly misguided.
